Now Reading...

I live in a pretty small town.
The library here, while it has come a long way, still has a ways to go.
The new acquisitions are limited, any current book, DVD, or magazine has a huge waiting list, and most of the people you see there are frightening (sorry, everyone- but it's true.)
The new release section can be life threatening and I have been assaulted there more than once. (Ya, sure it was an "accident", granny. I'm on to you.)

Everything is very hit and miss and any Oprah Book Club Selection would have at least 50 people ahead of you waiting to get their grubby little hands on it.
Plus, I'm still waiting for Tori Spelling's third book to come in.
We got the first two, but not the third.
Weird, random, and annoying.

So ever since Mindy Kaling's book came out, I have been searching the library catalog (now online!) to see if it would be making it's way into my home any time soon.
Sadly, no books by Ms. Kaling to be found.
I checked almost every few days for the last two months. I have found that if it doesn't show up within a few weeks of the release date, it's not gonna happen.
Plan B is to wait a really long time until everyone else on the planet has already read it and then scour Ebay for the best deal.
I had pretty much given up on this one (at least for any time in 2012.)
Then, the other night, in a fit of insomnia induced insanity, I decided to check again... just for laughs.

YAY! It was there! It was being processed!
I immediately cancelled one of the other books I had on hold (we are only allowed to request 10 items at a time) and went to request it and get on the waiting list.
The book was still in cataloging, and not available to be wait listed.
This was good and bad.
The good thing was there weren't already 100 people ahead of me in line. The bad news, I was gonna have to keep checking back repeatedly until it moved from processing to on the shelf. This must be my week because it happened surprisingly quick for this Podunk place and
I am #1!!!
The first in line, no one ahead of me, making it's way to my library holding shelf as we speak.
It's the little things, people.
This made me really super super happy! Yes, I know, I'm a total dork and specifically book nerd.
Maybe next time I'll tell you about the library gang I started just to keep the DVD shelf a safe place for old and young alike.

So I can't wait for that to come in and the day I can go and actually check it out.

But what I'm currently "reading" now is actually an audio book.
I know you're thinking CD or MP3, but think again. We're talking TAPE, ladies and gents. That's right TAPE. An actual book on TAPE.
I go through phases where I get really into listening to books and I'm in one now.
The problem is, my STUPID car has a 6 CD changer in the trunk.

I don't know who thought this was a good idea, but I would like to kick them in the shins.
Pretty much every CD I've ever owned has skipped in this car, and CD's that play fine in any other player will skip or not play, etc. It's so frustrating, many times I have come close to ripping the whole thing out the dash. (Why is driving with headphones on illegal? Why?!)

The last few book CD's I listened to were getting worse and worse so I had to figure something else out.
Fortunately, my crazy old and inefficient car stereo system also still has a tape deck.
And my library, as archaic as it is, still offers many, many cassettes. Problem solved.

And, I can switch back and forth from audio book to CD when I feel like listening to music instead without having to get into my trunk. The only downside is the tapes are really old and have a weird white noise background so I have to turn it up pretty loud to hear. I'm probably blowing out my speakers doing this, I guess I just can't win. But so far, so good.

So I can read actual books in bed, listen to books on tape in my car, and use the CD audio books at work, where nothing skips and I don't have to rewind every 10 seconds just to follow the plot.
I actually do love listening to books in the car. You would be surprised how fast you can get through an average sized book when you listen to it while running all your errands, commuting to work, etc. I really feel like I've accomplished something besides just wasting time.
Plus, I love being read to...it's so soothing and relaxing. Brings me back to childhood.
(Again, why should little ones have all the fun?)

Right now I am listening to 1984. I have read this before but not for a very long time. I have of wanted to re-read it for a while, so this works out good because I can read it, without having to actually re-read it.

If you haven't discovered this one yet, I highly recommend it. It's a classic, but not boring. You will get completely swept up in the world of Big Brother, Winston Smith, and thought police. Plus, it's the year I was born so I've always liked that.
I just gave away my age, didn't I? Ah man, I was gonna start lying about that too.
It's so cool that a book written in 1948 can still be so relevant today.
Definitely worth reading if you haven't already.

The next actual/physical book I'm going to start is The Nobodies Album.
I heard it was good. Haven't started it yet, but plan to this week.
Anyone read this one already?

Tv Talk: January and February

I don't remember January as having that much exciting TV going on, but I guess I was out of it last year or something.

Question: What is my fave thing about January?

Answer: Award shows!!

I am SO excited!

January is a BIG month.

Jan 11- People's Choice Awards

Jan 12- Critics Choice Awards

Jan 15- Golden Globe Awards

Jan 27- SAG Awards

And the Oscars of course are set for February 26th. I just realized my sister will be here for them!! This is the greatest news ever. We are going all out this year, that's for sure!
(I completely missed out last year due to a severe snow storm...it's a long story, but I was NOT happy! It took me a while to get over that one. So this will have to be 2 years of Oscars worthy.)

Not quite an awards show- but not to be left out... Miss America Pageant airs this Saturday the 14th.

I see lots of formal gown critiquing in my future!

Noteworthy season or series premieres:

Cajun Pawn Stars
I do like the original so I will probably check this out.

Rob!
Most likely horrible.

Oprah's Next Chapter
Trying to save the OWN network by putting O herself back on TV interviewing people.
I will probably just watch an episode here or there.

White Collar
Coming back for a new season on USA

Mobbed
Howie Mandel's flash mob show. People use them to announce things or reveal secrets. A little OTT, but entertaining.

Conan
New episodes!

Brad Brad World
Rachel Zoe's ex-assistant tries to make it as a stylist.

NY Ink
New episodes.

24 Hour Catwalk
Alexa Chung hosts this Project Runway type competition show

Project Runway All Stars
First episode, not impressed. Loved Rami's first look, but hated his second one. And where is Heidi? What happened to her? Definitely missing Tim Gunn and the judges, but so far I like the new set ok.

Teen Mom 2
This is getting harder and harder to watch.

Jane By Design
ABC family's new series.

Rachael vs Guy Celeb Cook Off
Celeb should be in quotes. I am only watching this because of LDP. The rest of the celebrities are like parodies of themselves. (Or I've never heard of them)

Cupcake Wars
New episodes! I LOVE this show!

The Firm
Based on the book and movie. Haven't decided if I'm going to give this one a try or not yet.

Watch What Happens Live
Andy's live 5 nights a week now.

Extreme Coupon All stars
This show takes past participants and makes them compete against one another for who can save the most money. A little silly, but a must see if you're still obsessed with couponing.

Extreme Cheapskates
I just heard about this- apparently it follows the most "frugal" people in the country.
Does anyone know if this is good?

Shipping Wars
In the same vein as storage wars, auction hunters, etc. This show explores the wonderful world of freight.

Are You There, Chelsea?
Now on Wednesday nights. If you like Chelsea Handler, check this out.

Napoleon
Dynamite
Animated series based on the movie. I LOVE the movie so will most likely tune in to see if this is funny or just stupid.

Betty White Prank Show
Punk'd: Betty White style!

Bachelor
Watch Ben find love. Or just watch him be on TV for the next 12 weeks.

Alcatraz
New suspense/drama show...might be too scary for me.

Coming in February:

Jersey Couture
I am so excited this show got a second season. I didn't think it would, because it's been so long since the first. I know people think it's cheesy, but I loved watching the family that owns this dress shop help Jersey women find their look for prom, weddings, pageants, etc.

Downton
Abbey
The PBS show that came out of nowhere. Season 2 for those of you who had the foresight to start watching season 1.

Fashion Star
NBC's fashion competition show.

Super Bowl
GO, NINERS!

Puppy Bowl
Come on, admit it. You know this is WAY better than any football game.

Celebrity Apprentice
Look at this bunch...should be CRAZY!

So far the weather here has been unseasonably warm, but whenever the rain decides to come, I'll have a stocked up DVR for those dreary days.

Any other shows worth watching I don't know about?

Nature Time Out

Sometimes when life starts to feel a little overwhelming the best thing you can do is give yourself a time out.

Why should little ones have all the fun?

I always feel calmer and more optimistic when I take a minute to relax, breathe, and enjoy the beautiful surroundings I am fortunate enough to be close to.

I hate that indescribable restless/anxious feeling I seem to get quite often. Since I can't always hit the road or runaway like my instincts tell me to when I feel that way, I have to find a solution a little closer to home. Sometimes, nothing but traveling far far away will cure it though.
I can't help it- I am a gypsy nomad at heart. I blame the 'rents.

My attempt at a top knot now my hair is (slowly) growing

Yes, I found some....the elusive Missoni for Target knit patterned flats. I found them at the Target in Yuba City, CA. (Random, I know.) They had a ton of shoes (heels and rain boots too) and some home wear, along with one floppy hat I found in with the wallets for some weird reason. A lot of it was marked down too- the shoes were all half price! If you're still on the lookout try checking the clearance section, or some items have been restocked online too.

What do you do to relax when it feels like the walls are closing in?

OOTD- Anna Sui for Anthropologie Terrawatt Skirt

I am so glad this week is coming to an end.

Too crazy! No down time! So tired!

Oh well, this skirt cheered me up.

I almost sent her back to the store, but decided against it. The colors and tiers just won me over.

Skirt: Anna Sui for Anthropologie Terrawatt skirt
Sweater: Loft
Tights: Target
Boots: Target
Ring: Dollar Store pipe cleaners/ made by me! (Martha Stewart tutorial here)

1. One of my favorite things to do when I have free time is
lounge and laze around. I like reading and/or vegging out on the couch.
.

2. When I have free time I tend to stay in my PJ's the majority of the day .

3. If I had an entire day completely to myself I would sleep in, have a leisurely breakfast, go for a walk, read, watch tv, tool around on the computer, take a nap, have a glass of wine, watch a movie, go to bed!

4. I would prefer to spend my free time (alone or with others...) alone- I am a tried and true complete introvert. Spending time alone is how I recharge my batteries.

6. The best thing about free time is getting to do whatever you want, whenever you want.

7. The next time I have free time I should probably clean the disaster area that is my room/closet but instead, I'll probably make it even more of a mess!

OOTD- DIY Glitter Boots

I couldn't wait to wear my "new" boots.

I got so many compliments (and not just from women!)

These things definitely brighten even the dreariest of days.

If I can do it, anyone can- believe me!

(This pair cost $13 on sale at Old Navy. This is the gray color, but they are more of a light brown with grayish undertones :-)

What are you waiting for? Get some glitter in your life!

Random Food Pics

It's time for another hunger-inducing post!

Here's a few of the food pics my camera has been collecting from the last few weeks.

Some sweet, some savory- all delicious!

Scroll through at your own risk! :-)

First up: the last time my mom made a turkey. I had been having SEVERE turkey dinner cravings for a while and this meal did not disappoint. I went back three times and only stopped myself because of the pumpkin pie waiting to be devoured for dessert. I know everyone says this, but my MOM makes the best stuffing! It's my favorite turkey side dish and I OD on it every time. I have never been brave enough to attempt to make one on my own. I guess it's a good thing Mom's still around!

I know my plate could be more colorful, but I'm sorry, I don't like cranberry sauce or yams.
I stick to mostly the starches and once I've built my plate, I pour gravy over EVERYTHING!

These are the leftovers she sent me home with- they are as big as my head! Thanks, mom!

I made a ham for the first time! I was really intimidated by the size (20 lbs- it was on sale) and cooking process (3+ hours!), but I'm really glad I cooked him up anyway (hubby helped a lot.) It was worth the time because that thing turned out good! We made a glaze of butter, brown sugar, oj, honey and mustard and once it was done we used the juices as a gravy.
He fed us for a long time!
It was a huge bone-in ham ( not the spiral cut kind- in case you were wondering.)
This is a pic of the breakfast in couch the other mister served me a few weekends ago. He said it was a scary clown. Not sure about that one, but it tasted good- a bed of spinach topped with hash browns and bacon, topped with 2 fried eggs. Perfect for a Saturday morning brunch.

Gingerbread cupcake with cream cheese frosting- SO GOOD!

Pumpkin scone with maple glaze from my local coffee shop.

Pumpkin bagel with vanilla cream cheese. I look forward to this every year!
Half a chocolate whoopie pie... No top=more frosting= very happy me!
